Is there any story or reason behind the name? Or is it just simply a random choice of word? Does it mean anything outside being a hat haha.
edit: i feel stupid for asking now, should have guessed it had to do with Redhat…
- Mark Ewing used to wear a red Cornell lacrosse cap and when he would help in computer labs people would look for a the man in the red hat. The company was called Red Hat after Mark but their logo has been a person in a fedora for a long time. - Fedora is a community continuation of Red Hat Linux, which was discontinued in favor of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Back when I was starting out Fedora wasn’t a thing, you downloaded Red Hat Linux for free directly from the company or could buy it in a box. - Didn’t know the backstory, thanks for sharing! - I’m relieved to hear he didn’t walk around in a red fedora. - M’computer
- But he was wearing just a red hat… - sudo put some pants on

- Red hat’s logo is a red fedora. It’s not that deep.
- Red Hat was the corporate distro, Fedora is the casual version of it - *testing :)

- deleted by creator - “Fedora - a man’s hat, like a trilby but with a wider brim” (source) and Fedora is developed by the Red Hat organization

- Ma lady… - I can’t deny that the name’s connotation in internet culture is what turned me away from Fedora for many, many years. It is an unfortunate coincidence. - I believe the meme to postdate the name of the distro.
- M’kernel is euphoric.
- And I don’t look even slightest like Humphrey Bogart no matter what kind of fedora I’d wear.
- Haha same here…

- M’Linux

- The RedHat installer used to have conflicting versions of the origin of the name RedHat. - deleted by creator

- Ora is short for OpeRAting System. People often referred to it as “feature complete”, thus “fed”. It’s a Fedora. - And here I thought it was federated. An easy mistake to make I suppose…
