  • Yep I definitely took it wrong, one of the problems with text only communication… No body language or audio cues! No worries.

The devs of my audio interface have definitely been asked a fair bit about Linux compatibility… But considering they’ve not even bothered bringing their new DAW to PC, it seems they’re strongly focussed on mac ecosystems only for the foreseeable.

Personally I think compatibility should be a two way street pun not intended! But unfortunately companies tend to vote with our wallets, so until Linux becomes even more established I doubt they will dedicate much if any resources to making their devices work on it. Shame.

I bought a new audio interface for live work a few months back, went for an audient id24 partly because it’s Linux compatible (although no native drivers). So I will get stuck in at some point. I started using PCs back when floppy disks were actually floppy so I’m not afraid of command line stuff!

  • None of the main adobe suite works on Linux either, so let’s not pretend my use case is so narrow. Literally none of the programs I use to work (Cubase, Audition, After Effects, Illustrator, Premiere, yes I can install a virtual windows machine but that completely defeats the purpose) works with Linux. And from what I gather last time I researched this, hardly any audio interfaces are Linux compatible. Most of the games I want to play also are not Linux-compatible.

Fact of the matter is, despite the large dedicated userbase (which I appreciate), it still has a giant gap where many prosumers and casual users cannot utilise it. It’s no good saying “ahhh well YOU’RE not compatible with US! No u!”. I’d love to switch and tbh am strongly considering a setup for live PA that’s Linux based, in the hope that it brings greater stability. But it’s going to be a large investment of time, and I’ll have to buy a different audio interface if I have a hope of making it work.

My sister’s partner has a kid, with a woman he had a one-night-stand with. She’s an absolute fucking psycho, borderline negligent mother. Just about competent enough that social services do fuck all, but incompetent enough that the poor girl (who’s now 3) is blatantly falling behind in terms of development. And nothing he can do as he only has her 50% of the time.

My absolute worst nightmare. Wrap it before you tap it.

  • I think we’re talking past each other.

Sorry if it’s devolved to that! It’s not me downvoting your replies btw. As far as I’m concerned this is an interesting conversation not an argument, we both clearly feel strongly / passionately about our viewpoint and imo are being fairly cogent / non-combative with each other.

Re Al Jazeera, I’ve found their reporting difficult to trust for a while, and their current reporting imo is very strongly biased against Israel. EG the hospital blast, which many indie sources are now saying is almost certainly not due to an IDF strike (which they still haven’t retracted), or the ‘church destroyed’ which turned out to be a compound that Hamas had setup in next door, with one church wall being destroyed (and obv the compound next door). Though it begs the question, where can we turn right now for genuinely independant reporting on this? Israeli sources are going to slant heavily towards Israel / IDF, Palestinian sources are going to slant heavily towards Palestine / Hamas. Which goes back to my earlier point about taking a breath and trying, somehow, to remain objective in the face of rage-inducing content.

Not voting for either party is as powerful a message as a vote since each vote is counted and voter turnout is a very telling sign

Not sure exactly how it works in USA compared to UK, but I encourage everyone who genuinely doesn’t want to vote (I say genuinely because many simply can’t be bothered to engage, which I also understand when people are fatigued after a hard day’s work) to spoil their ballot rather than not voting. That way your non-engagement is directly observed and counted. Though ensure you do it properly, one guy here last election drew a dick on the ballot paper, but because the helmet strayed into a box, that was taken as his vote.

  • Democrats snubbed Bernie in 2016 in favor of Hillary and fucked its voter base which cost them and us their supporters the elections and unleashed 4 years of hell on this country

Agreed. But, after that happened, you had an unpalatable choice between ‘holding your nose’ to vote for a candidate who wasn’t fucking insane, or staying home. That might not be the choice you wanted but it’s still a choice that enabled the election of Trump.

You’re right, I cannot find any recent articles of Biden personally calling for ceasefire (though I can find historical articles of him calling for ceasefires last time this conflict flared up). I can however find lots and lots of articles re progressive dems calling for ceasefire and putting pressure on him to do likewise. This is what I meant by ‘stronger voice from inside’. You have no voice on the outside.

  • Again, I get where you’re coming from, but this is how America ended up with Trump. Many people were convinced to stay home and ‘not vote’ for Clinton. Biden, Starmer, whichever politician you want to smear as being ‘complicit in genocide’ is being quite vocal in calls for aid and a ceasefire. The reality doesn’t match with how you’re allowing people to paint it for you.

Now more than ever, we all need to make a concerted effort not to be lead by our feels. Burned babies and tortured civvies are enraging. Cutting off water / supplies / energy is enraging. Tieing a group of children together and setting them on fire is enraging. Bombing Gaza is enraging. The hard-right Israeli government AND the Islamic fundies want us to be enraged because that’s when we make rash judgements and allow the situation to become further enflamed.

Your voice is stronger from the inside than sitting with tape over your mouth in your house. Imo.

  • It’s absolutely insane how many things need turning off to gain some modicum of privacy with win10, I refuse to upgrade but imagine it’s worse in win11.

Totally understand the love for Linux. If my audio interface & DAW were compatible I would investigated switching way back. There are other interfaces which appear to be compatible, and other DAWs, but I am highly proficient in the one I’ve used for ~15 years and don’t want to invest time learning a new one; and my audio interface lets me use very, very high end emulations of hardware (UAD).

Seriously considering Linux for potential future live PA work though. Stability is appealing for live stuff!

  • I get what you’re saying, but he hasn’t invested jack. He inherited a portfolio of local properties when his dad passed away a few years back, all mortgage-free (I know other members of his family so have more info about him than he realises).

When his dad died, his cousin warned me: “His son is taking over the properties, he is a bastard, be prepared for your rent to go up”. Within weeks of gaining control he put my rent up. I dunno, maybe he immediately remortgaged all the properties to buy more. I hope he goes bust.

  • My landlord served notice on me after 13 years, I’m moving home next month. He is a greedy little cunt, constantly tried to pressure me to refurbish his property for him despite me being the tenant. Last time I asked for a minor repair, he immediately notified the letting agent that he would be putting my rent up this coming October. Regardless, I agreed the new price, only to still be served notice on (I assume because he knows he can get a slightly higher rent by getting a brand new tenant in, rather than an increase).

Genuinely though I was tempted to do some redecorating. This is (for now) my home. It sucks living in a rundown home; the wallpaper / carpets in this house afaik are at least 25 years old. But when you get ‘too demanding’ then you suddenly find yourself out of a home.
