You have to be careful about that too, the code isn’t written to be easily understood by casual reading.

For example, the code will describe your hot, neutral, and ground wires as “ungrounded, grounded, and grounding” wires. Applying rules meant for a “grounding” wire to a “grounded” wire can have serious issues.

The whole code is written like that, where it’s really easy to get confused if you don’t understand the exact terminology it uses.

As an electrician, it’s difficult to give good electrical advice over the internet.

First of all, you don’t know how capable someone actually is at doing work. There’s both a knowledge and a technique requirement for quality work. Bad electrical work can easily cause house fires and death, if I tell someone online how to fix an issue, and they electrocute themselves or burn down their house, I’m partially responsible for that.

Second, it’s hard to give good advice on how something should be done without seeing it in person. Small details that are hard to get from a description or image can change how stuff is required to be done, and the code is complicated and has lots of exceptions and different requirements. Also different areas have different code requirements, and different AHJ requirements, so fully accurate advice has to come from an electrician in your actual area.

Final thing I’ll mention is that getting qualified as an electrician is hard. Getting a full electrical license where I live requires 8 years of experience (4 years being directly supervised, then 4 years of light supervision). You also have to pass a pretty difficult exam, electricians usually spend 6+ months studying hard and taking training classes for the exam, and then it still has an abysmal first attempt pass rate and normally takes many attempts to eventually pass. Ultimately after all of that (8 years, months of focused study and classes, multiple test attempts), 25-30% of people are never able to pass and get their full license.

With all that considered, I’m happy to give advice to other electricians online. If they’re already certified I can have some confidence that they have the knowledge and skills to do a good job with any advice given. However trying to give actually good, responsible advice to someone who is uncertified and a complete unknown on terms of skill/knowledge/location with only a partial knowledge of their problems and setup, it’s hard. It’s much easier to recommend they just get a licensed electrician from their area to take a look at it.

They’re worried about advertising growth, not user growth. If anything this will make them more likely to ban users as they try to make the site more acceptable to advertisers.

The audience being a sacrifice doesn’t always work out when they’re the ones expected to buy the game.

In my experience it’s largely been unreal engine 5 games.

The issues with both Doom DA and Indiana Jones is that they have mandatory ray tracing that can’t be disabled. I generally think that ray tracing is a often a waste, it’s far too resource demanding, other lighting techniques can offer very similar visuals for a fraction of the cost.

Supposedly their cloud hosted version will block those responses, but the local run version does not.

Yeah that was my first thought as well for some reason. Obviously solar calculators/etc have been around for longer so that makes more sense, but I fully clicked on this hoping it was energy from key presses.

I learned a lot by using a less common distro (solus). When I would have a problem, the solutions I could find on forums or arch wiki wouldn’t apply to my distro directly, and I would have to look into the solution for long enough to understand what needed to change in order for the solution to work.

You can probably do this on any distro, just by not using commands you find online until you understand what they’re doing and why that might fix your problem. Arch wiki is a great resource for any distro, even though it won’t always be accurate for the distro you’re on.

Wait this is in the US? How, this is even more expensive than Hawaii, and they have obvious reasons for power to be more expensive there

That seems really high, I think power where I live is about 12-14 cents per kilowatt hour. What makes it so expenses where you live?

I know a lot of subreddits like that have rules that you have to be part of the profession to post. Reason being that they don’t want amateurs/etc to fill up the community with posts asking for advice, but instead want it to be a place for people in the profession to be able to talk to other professionals.

I can fully understand that approach, and how following that rule would directly lead to posts like this getting locked. At the same time, this is an interesting post and seems like it would have interesting discussion.

So basically this post probably breaks the written rules of the community, but is the kind of content that they wanted the rules to encourage. If it was my community I’d let the post stay (maybe with a mod comment on why it was allowed to stay up), but it’s always risky to enforce the written rules inconsistently. I’ve seen a lot of communities get upset about inconsistent mods.

Some HOAs are better than others.

A bank I used for a mortgage has mandatory text message 2fa if they think you’re on a new device (won’t allow google auth/etc). And web browsers like firefox/brave block enough cookies/etc that it requires the “new device” authentication everytime I log in.

Problem is, for a couple months there was some delay with their text messages. It would take 10-20 minutes to send your 2fa code, and the code would expire after 5 min, meaning that by the time you got the code it was always expired and unusable.

Made it completely impossible to log in to pay my mortgage payments. Led to some really frustrating talks on the phone about how I didn’t want to pay with a credit card over the phone, I wanted them to fix their damn system so I could log in and pay via bank transfer like usual.

No, I straight up had two different installation media’s fail until I went back and shut down windows fully. I’ve never run into that before on an install before.

First I tried ZorinOS, and it would fail to even boot into the live environment. I tried multiple times and even made a new install media. Then I tried fedora silverblue, it would get into the install environment but couldn’t do any kind of partitioning etc to the drive. I then rebooted to windows, shut it down fully, and tried again. This time fedora could edit the drive partitions, and zorin could load the live environment and install.

Previously I’ve had issues with shared drives being locked by windows, but this was the first time I’ve ever had an install fail because windows wasn’t shutdown fully. I don’t usually dual boot these days either though (I was setting up this computer for family) so I figured maybe something had changed with newer versions of windows or device security.

Make sure windows was shut down all the way. Normally when you shutdown windows, it only hibernates and it locks it’s partitions to prevent editing. I tried installing Zorin for a family member recently, and it couldn’t install until I booted back into windows and shut it down fully.

To shutdown fully, in windows you need to either hold shift while clicking the shutdown button, or open the run box and run the command shutdown -s -t 00

Yeah, it’s unfortunately common to have games running better through proton than the native port. We’ve seen a lot of devs drop their linux port recently because the proton version ran better with fewer issues.

Obviously a well executed native linux port is preferable, but a lot of smaller devs have trouble justifying spending a lot of time working out kinks for a linux port if the game already runs great through proton.

Recently ran into an issue with Endeavour OS where the built in printer program would give errors when trying to add my network ecotank printer.

Tried using cups terminal and it worked the first time, and is still working weeks later.

So some of the GUI printer apps that distros ship with have issues apparently, but I don’t know the extent of it.

Part of what was weird is I tried paying with Google Play credit, and it wouldn’t take that either.

Huh, google play is refusing to sell it to me. Getting a [OR- FGEMF-20] error code regardless of payment method.

Edit: searching I came across a reddit thread, the post is older but all the comments are people complaining about this issue with trying to buy Balatro today.
