I’ve done god only knows how many searches looking for a solution to this with no joy so any help you can offer would be great.
I’m after an image editor that has the following:
- Must be PHP or JavaScript (even jQuery) or some combo of the two
- Must allow images to be uploaded
- Must allow text to be dynamically added, resized, color changed and positioned
- Must allow fonts to be chosen from a list of fonts I upload to the server, not the basic browser fonts or Google Fonts etc.
- Must allow generation and download of new image based on the old image + the added text

This statement doesn’t make any sense. You seem to be looking for a open-source version of Photopea because GIMP / Paint.net is hard to use? lol

Based on the description OP wants a selfhosted meme generator.
Kind of. But it wouldn’t be for memes. So that functionality but not that purpose.
Edit: using that as a search phrase has given me a lot of options that I can fork. Thanks for putting the idea in my head :)
What doesn’t make sense about it? They don’t have the knowledge to use an offline image editor so I’d like to offer them the ability to make very simple changes to an image. Photopea is beyond what they need and would no doubt be equally confusing for them.
What doesn’t make sense is your use of the term “offline editor” - it’s entirely nonsensical in this context. If they can’t use an offline editor, they won’t be any better with an online editor. It’s like saying you need a 4 door car because you can’t drive a 2 door car - it’s the same thing with more seats. Photo editing is photo editing regardless of where the software is hosted.
What on earth are you talking about? How is an offline editor like Photoshop or GIMP in any way comparable to a simple app like the one i described in my post, that simply allows a user to add text to an image?
Just use imgflip.com - that’s all it does is add text to images.
Very comparable. There’s nothing wrong with getting a whole box of tools for free even if you just need a single screwdriver. Open image in GIMP, text tool, done.
Sorry, I don’t want to be rude but youre talking rubbish.
Getting all of them to install a big offline application with an interface that is totally new to them and will require a substantial learning curve if there’s a possible solution that allows them to simply and easily do the only thing they need is ridiculous.
I think there’s a misunderstanding. What you’re talking about OP is the interface, what the others are talking about is the location. You’re not talking about the same thing, hence you’re not understanding them.
Both sides are use the term offline/online, tho its meaning is not looks but instead location
I asked for help in a self-hosting community. How could my desired location be misunderstood by anyone with an IQ above 10?
This little side -journey has been a complete waste of time. All I wanted was a recommendation or two relevant to things I needed which I clearly explained in my post. Instead I got told I was making no sense and should use third party solutions which is a remarkable thing to read in a self hosting community where I would assume most people realise others want y’know to self host.
If people don’t have relevant recommendations they could’ve just said that or even better, say nothing.
Well, if you’re that set on it, it’s simple enough of a concept that you could probably write it yourself.
Thanks to the one person who actually posted something on topic I’ve found a few things I can modify.
He’s saying you’d probably have more luck finding any simplified photo editor, rather than limiting yourself to just hosted. Something like MS Paint or KolourPaint but I don’t believe they will let you rotate text.

Welcome to Costco, I love you
How about miniPaint? Its mostly in JS.

I’m interested to see what hosted options are out there as well.
If you’re willing to consider alternatives, take a look at Greenshot. It’s a free and open source local program that takes a screenshot which allows you to edit it directly and copy the image to clipboard without saving.
It includes the ability to add text, blur out parts, crop, draw arrows. Just press print screen to capture an image.
