Sigh… reminds me I have to file my US tax returns.
Shitposter while I tend to two babies. Maybe when I have my life back, I’ll help us get a few more niche communities back?

Sigh… reminds me I have to file my US tax returns.
That’s what I figured and I appreciate the confirmation. Since I work in education it’s probably a “better safe than sorry” approach since the laws on student privacy are actually enforced, unlike in corporate. (Obviously it’s security theater, though, as web apps and Windows integration make emails and files easy to steal anyway).
Yeah, I think if it’s web apps it’s fine, just aren’t ideal. I was mostly frustrated I couldn’t use a third party email app or OneDrive integration app. It’s more a grievance with the university I work for, though.
I’ll be trying to contribute to that!
Already hit a difficulty since my workplace uses Microsoft for everything and the admins lock out third party stuff. I guess I can access files on outlook and OneDrive via browser based options but God they’re awful.

I can confirm this Christmas season that extended family members do in fact click on recommendations and so on, reaffirming that awful approach.
The amount of random crap we got… sigh. The thought counts, I guess.

Him 20-30 years ago probably would have. This is a man who, when I was a kid, made a custom UI for msdos so my brother and I could play games easier. He wouldn’t just tinker, he’d probably be contributing.
Old age and alcoholism has kind of robbed him of that, though. At this point he’ll probably just ask me to fix it if it goes wrong, lol

It’s unfortunate that years as a tech guy at his job has made him less software curious, so probably bazzite then. Rather, I guess when it’s your job to fix things, tinkering isn’t fun anymore.

I ended up with CachyOS over Bazzite but I’m looking into the latter for my dad since I’m guessing it’s more stable and easier.
I just… Idk, I like Arch over Fedora. I blame the little pacman eating my progress whenever I install stuff in konsole. Desktop mode to desktop mode it’s the same KDE Plasma I’d be using, though. Are there any other striking differences between Cachy and Bazzite?
Edit: it was good to bring it up here, y’all are very knowledgeable on these things. It sounds to me that I need to get bazzite for my dad mostly because he won’t want to fuss or work on it and that I made the right call for myself since Cachy (and Arch in general) gives more flexibility. Frankly I might not even give him desktop mode default, he strictly wants something to play from bed in full on retirement mode.

Mumble was… fine. My friends actually moved to Discord from Mumble for our MMO stuff but that was primarily because it was easier to invite randos to the chat. That quality makes it almost impossible to break away from atm.
I recall the latency being only a little worse than Discord, but I think that’s because a friend set up the server at his work as a side thing (he also hosted Minecraft and Terraria). It’s not too complex to setup, but your quality will depend a lot on the computer and network you’re running. At least, it did for us, back in the day.
We’ve thought about alternatives to Discord. Old names were Ventrilo and TeamSpeak but they’re just not very modern. Plus, now almost every chat app has voice, too. Just, for features, it’s hard to beat Discord at this… though I’m willing to read the other comments to get for ideas, too. Lol

I found that odd for a Lemmy post but also, one year milk is in much worse condition than this image. Unless they froze it for clout? Why go through the trouble?
But that just makes me wonder even more why that is blocked out, lol.
A while ago. Only upside is they say they don’t keep your prompts or train models, but I have my doubts.

I however found it mildly interesting that Zohran Mamdani was making this part of the issues he’s messaging about for NYC, to at least drive down the price for locals. Free childcare, public owned groceries, sure, but FIFA tickets? Yet this graphic kinda puts that in perspective, so I get it.

Been in talks to run Star Ocean along with a friend so we could compare notes and talk about stuff. Hard to decide between the OG and the PSP remake, though.
Also kudos to starting Metroid, there’s so few misses in that series.

This isn’t terribly believable; I’ve seen some wildly bad takes in “the literature” because there’s just so many for-profit journals that you get a ton of junk science. That, or you find something in the archives from 50 years ago.
Now, if the professor is any good they’ll put restrictions on even that but the bar is so low we’re just happy to see a citation that isn’t a blog or made up by AI.

Carbrain is strong, but they’re still trying to invest some in public trans. Unfortunately, I saw recently they’ve been pushing a public Uber alternative as a sort of last step after using a train, which I can’t imagine helps.
I kind of understand why-- LA is very spread out. I was told or was because of earthquakes that we couldn’t build high but that doesn’t seem to be true anymore.
If it’s any consolation, we haven’t taken the “one more lane” thing too far, there aren’t 12 lane freeway monstrosities at least.
I mean, it’s actually healthier to an economy to keep the well trained immigrants but you know how racist af people are. These aren’t just professionals, they’re pre-wealthy professionals and often have seed money to lead start-ups, lol
But racism and xenophobia are self destructive.
Having actually worked in academia, though, this actually does have a kind of fucked up capitalist answer (and it really isn’t merit) which is most true in public universities more so than Harvard: international students pay more. A lot more, in fact… so much so that my alma mater of UCLA has marketing campaigns in places like China.
As others point out, though, this isn’t zero-sum. More money theoretically means more subsidized US students (and more seats in general). At UCLA, this is especially true since any Californian making less than a certain amount can pretty much get a free ride (and even if not that, highly discounted tuition). I myself being a beneficiary of that, too, btw.
Now, private schools on the other hand, they probably pocket that cash. USC being my most local example, but I bet Harvard does the pay to win shit, too. I think it’s correct to take issue with how they operate, but MAGA is misleading people as they always do in any form of class warfare.
There are 8 billion people on earth and close to 400 million are in the US. There can, and will be, even worse takes out there.

Well that’s one way to balance the budget, no more credit. We’re fuuuuuucked.
I teach, so trying to adjust old ppts for lecture got a little weird because it turned the bulletpoints into mailboxes, and equation formulas are done completely differently so libre just makes them uneditable (a picture?).
When things got wonky in lecture though I managed just fine. My students are much worse, they open shit in non-MS apps all the time (.notes for takehome exams, or like, keynote, whatever) and fuck up formatting all the time, often without even realizing it. (I do provide PDF alternatives at least). Explaining I use libre really easy in that case, lol.
