  • Hmm… this is common in action games and soulslikes, I think: Arkham in Devil May Cry 3 and Centipede Demon in Dark Souls come to mind. Those fights are all about positioning.

I feel as if this is a common solution to large boss fights in most games with melee combat; whereas humanoid enemies can typically either quickly turn, do sweeping 360 attacks, or teleport behind you (oh hi Vergil) so it’s less about positioning and more about pattern recognition and quick reflexes.

That said, it’s possible I misunderstood what you mean because I haven’t played older MH games or Xenoblade.

  • In a hypothetical three-layer scenario:

    1. Highest rated games, regardless of genres. (RDR2, The Last of Us, Portal… etc.)
    2. Highest rated games, that happen to belong to my favorite genres. (Bayonetta, GGPR, Hi-Fi Rush… etc.)
    3. Games that belong to my favorite genres, but aren’t necessarily highly rated. (Hellsinker., Soulstice, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax etc.)

Highest rating doesn’t guarantee I’ll like anything in layer 1, and not every game in layer 3 ends up being good enough. Layer 2 is the happy middle ground and the highest chance of finding games I’ll enjoy.

    +R mentioned, nice

Ayyy, let’s go. Who do you main?

  • Fuck, I don’t like most video games so I can throw a rock and hit one, but I’m gonna go with the genres I like just to make it interesting.

Fighting games: Mortal Kombat—I’m sorry, I like the hyper violence as much as the next guy, but the gameplay doesn’t do it for me at all. Entertaining to watch, but it stops there for me.

Action games: Suda51 overall. Like, play No More Heroes but steer clear of the rest. It’s mediocre combat wrapped in nonstop nonsense.

Shmups: ZeroRanger. I can’t stand that game.
