Any French commenters able to contextualize this news for the rest of us? Le Pen’s party has been gaining popularity in recent years, if I recall correctly. How is this likely to impact them? Are they organized enough to continue on without her, or is this likely to seriously hurt their electoral chances?
It’s always good to see a fascist lose but I’m not tuned in enough to French politics to know the full significance of this.

Not everyone fell for the lies. It’s a re-writing of history to suggest that everyone was all aboard with the war in Iraq. That war was preceded by the largest protests ever to occur up until that point. I personally recall Hans Blix, the UN official responsible for weapons inspections in Iraq at that time, repeatedly telling us that there was no evidence of such weapons programs. The New York Times should presumably be at least as questioning as my, at the time, 18 year old self. Particularly since I turned out to be right.
Hasbro is a terribly run company which is currently in the process of butchering the couple golden geese it has.
Very MTX-heavy mobile game aesthetic.
Back in 1999 I came across a copy of this book. Not a great book, I wouldn’t recommend it even if it weren’t decades out of date at this point. But it came with a CD-ROM with Red Hat Linux 6.2 which I installed on the family computer and never really looked back. I haven’t had a Windows install since 2004ish.
I’ve never really been an evangelist about it, though. And I would say that I was obsessed at one point but that’s waned quite a bit in the last few years. I’m still Linux only but messing about with computers generally quite a lot less.
Similar experience. My current install is not as old due to hardware failure but I’ve been using arch since 2007ish and it’s been stable enough through all that concurrent with sort of losing interest in being an admin for a hobby in the last few years that I’ve honestly got kind of bad at administrating the thing, haha. But it hardly matters because issues are rare.
I’m sure they’ve never thought of that before. They should give you a job as head of their diplomatic corps with ideas like this.
Different tools for different purposes. Strategy game, or a game where precise pointer control matters? Mouse and keyboard.
Racing, platformer, fighting game, that sort of thing, controller.
The reverse is also true? Israel is carrying out a policy of colonization against the Palestinians, and the Israeli public knows this. A policy which has lead to a very one sided body count. Does that mean the Israeli civilians killed recently were, in fact, valid targets? Of course not. Only a psychopath would say so.
And, in turn, only a psychopath would try to justify the collective punishment being carried out against Palestinians.
Quite the opposite. I feel the same as you, both sides should be allowed to stay. What’s done is done and ethnically cleansing the area is obviously a horrific crime that oughtn’t be advocated for in either direction. Where we differ is that I see the two state solution as setting the region up for the same conflict down the road. After decades of settlement the areas which would make up the Palestinian state would be non-contiguous swiss cheese. It would be an untenable situation.
Instead, a singular, secular, egalitarian state with universal suffrage and human rights guaranteed for all would be a challenging path, but I think ultimately a more stable one. And a path which would leave room for healing in the future.
Islam hadn’t even come about at that time, however, so people casting it as a religious war between Jews and Muslims come across as especially disingenuous if they try to frame it that way. Hell, the Romans hadn’t even Christianized at that time. Is it a war between Judaism and Paganism? C’mon.
This isn’t a conflict that was going on in the Ottoman period. This is a recent conflict and this attempt to turn it into a thousands year old religious war is bullshit. This is a colonial project where the goal is to take land. Very material in nature. That project has been in place since 1948.
Damn, 1948 was a thousand years ago? Time is weird, I guess.
Actually the only hope of truly lasting peace is the dissolution of Israel and the creation of a new state that doesn’t limit citizenship and suffrage along ethnic or religious lines.
More specifically,
I’m not a real fan.
