I have to set literally everything up again on a new microSD for my Pi because the apt-get repositories no longer support the Raspbian version I’m on. I’m not mad; good for security to update, but I don’t have half a day free anytime soon for it.
It is nice to generate generalizable code examples, to give me clues how stuff works. I find that my work (marine biogeochemistry) is obscure enough that there’s a certain level where I am still on my own. Which is a good sign for my future employability!
I use self-hosting for home assistant and jellyfin (behind two duckdns domains). I started to add more (Joplin server, Immich, tiny tiny RSS etc.) and found my workload increasing a lot, So I’ve paused that effort for now. For Joplin, I use syncthing with my Pi as a hub instead, which is much simpler.
It’s funny because the radio industry used to have this pay-to-play model. It began to be called “payola” and triggered a huge controversy including congressional investigations and an FCC crackdown. Yet here we are, with the same shit happening again in digital format. This is honestly worse than payola since radio was free and this is not. I don’t like paying to be advertised to. Considering leaving Spotify; there seem to be more and more shenanigans like this popping up, AND their subscription price just increased!
To be honest, there was years of backlash to the “tweeting” and “googling” but both made it into the lexicon. However it’s smart of Mastodon to just move to a normal terminology
Toots is no longer the official term, which has been replaced by “Posts”. Toots was always mostly a joke anyway
It’s never been really about free speech. It’s about elevating his speech. He believes he has a right to be listened to.
Yes, it has never been the best in terms of relevance or depth of index. But lately when I do searches for something like “cherry shrimp aquarium water quality requirements” I’ve been overwhelmed by AI-written SEO blogs. Where google still pulls up results from forums, reddit, other relevant actual humans talking.
