Yes I’ve noticed this on my devices now for awhile. I gave up and downloaded a separate app instead.

If I understand this correctly in my use case Assistant will get worse in my car with a aftermarket head unit. The mic isn’t that great on the radio and I’ve had better luck using the handset mic instead.

I have a couple of phones in use. 1 never answers which is fine as I have a display too, but the other answers every time I can do that if you unlock your device first.

I’ve seen people argue the real numbers of the decline for China are much worse than they have shared and they may already be past the point of no return like Japan and South Korea. It’s going to be interesting to see how they handle an aging population.

Asia does have a more recent tradition of kids being the retirement plan so they might fair a little better than places like the US where that is not the norm anymore. The US with their infrastructure crumbling from underfunding and a general lack of care, should provide a good side by side comparison of the ride down with the differences of family versus industry support of seniors.

Most here will recommend Linux Mint and it’s what I use now after trying many different versions over the years. There’s a simplicity to Mint that just works especially well for those just surfing and doing office tasks. I’ve given away old work laptops with just mint installed as most people just need a web browser and it works great for that.

MS office can be used in your web browser or you can switch to Libre Office which should open most of your office files.

If you have a old laptop or computer I recommend trying to install Mint there first to try it out. It’s pretty easy to start out there first before trying dual boot. You might be surprised at how quick your older laptop works with Mint in the process.

I use dual boot on my machines but most of the use these days is to get to a web browser so I find I rarely boot into windows now.

You will find Firefox is the default web browser but you can add Chrome to Mint if that’s your browser of choice.

Many will say what about the privacy issues with Chrome but many still use it. I’ve switched back to Firefox myself and I like it better for my Android phone.

I recall at one point Windows 10 was going to be the last version of the OS and they would just maintain that. I’m wondering if they said that to get the last of the Windows 7 and XP users to finally move to 10?

Last year at this time I had survived driving home from the Oregon Coast through a hell of a snowstorm in Portland with freezing rain to make it back to snowmageddon in Vancouver just in time for Xmas. This year I’m kinda of happy for rain and a high of 7C today.

For me it’s a big F you to HP and it has been that way for a many years now. I loved their HP 4250 series laser printers for work. Those things were work horses, almost every part could be replaced, and the toner was cheap for what it put out. I had various HP multifunctions after and they were just garbage. Updates breaking them and disabling them. Not being able to function without all ink and the ink being very expensive.

Canon and Epson came in second for me on the F you list. I had some great Canon multifunctions but Canon would just abandon them on the support side. If a windows update came along you would lose the ability to use the printer.

Epson was a true pain in the ass as the driver would constantly break and need to be reinstalled or it would reinstall itself each update and switch back to the default settings. When dealing with many of them in a office environment it was a hell.

The one special gem that deserves it’s own place in hell is the Xerox 7855. That was one of the worst POS they ever made. It was a contract service unit. It was always breaking down, there was never a tech available to fix it, and when they did fix it, it was not long before it broke again. We paid a lot up front for the thing.

We had a office party where we rolled it off the shipping deck in the warehouse into the parking lot below. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place. Tears of joy. We never used Xerox again after that.

The multiple home office brother printers we bought just seemed to work. Next time I need to outfit a factory it will be Brother. I currently have a small brother “inkvestment” multifunctions that works great at home due the little printing I need. Comes with a ton of ink and it was cheaper than replacing the ink in my last printer.

I’ve noticed they have added this trick to my FireCube. When it’s first powered on it looks for the remote and often doesn’t find it. Then as you press a button on it, it clicks the first show or movie being advertised.

I didn’t pay top dollar for a cube to deal with this crap.

I’m finding I’m using my laptop more than my cube these days. I’m also cancelling services as I go. Arrrhh time to go!

In Canada it’s a half bastardized app that’s an add on to the Amazon Prime App. Like tier inside of it. On a FireCube when trying to click on anything Paramount+ advertised on the home screens it takes one to the US full App only which won’t load due to the Geo lock for outside the US.

One needs to go into Prime to then find the shows. It’s a bit of a shit show and one of the first subs I cancelled in a line of them recently.

I recall watching this video sometime back covering this from the subsidy angle with new cars being made and then dumped just for the subsidy.

Thanks! I’ve installed, Ubuntu, KDE, a real old Red Hat, and most recently Linux Mint. Usually dual boot with Windows with either separate SSDs or on the same SSD. Thankfully they have come along ways and you don’t need to rebuild the GRUB every time windows did a update.

I’ve seen Debian is the king of Linux Distros but whenever I’ve looked into a install it seems like a beast. I’ll check out these links!

Is there a newbie way to install it? It looks pretty convoluted…

I have Mint on all my older Lenovo T and X series laptops. They run like champs except for the audio. It’s never loud enough. It’s fine though with a Bluetooth headset or external speaker. I wonder how yours are with extremal keyboard and mouse? Mine is ok but my Logitech Keys lights keep cycling through the lights

I’m also under the impression the M powered books are much better at thermo management and battery usage over PC versions?

Same here, I was wondering if there was some last remnant of Pebble watches still running for a second there.

I miss my Pebble too. I went to a Galaxy Gear S3 for a few years before ending up at a Fossil hybrid smart watch with a ink screen that gives me several days of battery life like my Pebble Steel use to have. It’s ok but it’s no Pebble.

Maybe not for them, technically they have adapted and overcome. They might even be thriving despite of it…

I recall a time when Windows 10 was going to be the last release of windows. It’s was just going to be updated forever. I’m glad that they have returned to the usual every second or so release is going to be a unfinished half baked turd until we can really get things right in the following release.
