  • I have HoloISO running around on mini PCs because they just work as remote steam machines, can play games in their own right, and I can use them as media boxes if I want. I don’t necessarily recommend it, but it was super easy to install and configure except for the Bluetooth issue that cropped up occasionally where I had to unload and reload the Bluetooth module. Now I just have a script that automatically does that on boot because I can’t give a shit about fixing it.

I also have a couple of Slax USBs running around. They used to be relatively popular with folks who fixed computers. I like building from modules and I’m familiar with Slackware so it was a good fit for a live environment.

  • Hell, poorer clinics use old versions of EMR/EHR software that they bought in '08 and host locally. Some of that shit barely supports Windows 7. Some of that software doesn’t support things like HL7 properly so getting the data out and into a newer one can be cost prohibitive in and of itself because you’ve got to pay someone to write a translator for a shitty database in a format that was purposefully confusing to keep vendor lock in for a vendor that went tits up a year later.

I mentioned before that I have a lot of certificates for a lot of those companies that no longer exist. If it wasn’t soul crushing I could probably make a decent living just moving people from those systems. But my soul is already a shriveled piece of garbage and I don’t want to purposely squeeze the last little bit of juice out just yet.

  • I can’t get into the whole debate because I’m not knowledgeable enough to articulate the difference between a genuinely good game and games using skinnerbox mechanics to force operant conditioning. However, I have an anecdote.

I used to play a mobile game that was mid level fun, but a very obvious skinnerbox with time based turns (energy? Mana stones? Hell, I don’t remember), daily and weekly battles, sporadic new releases where you had a chance to get some kind of cool stuff, and clan activities. I had to put it down for a couple of weeks due to real life and just never picked it back up. I still talk to some of the guys on discord but after not being on every day I stopped caring about the game entirely.

  • Accurate. I get pissy about my deliveries (FedEx is notoriously bad here) but the truth of the matter is that the drivers are way overworked. They time shit down to the minute but assume traffic is constantly as good as the best days. So yeah, they build in time for bathroom breaks and to get everything where it goes as long as no one on the road has wrecked, is driving slow, and there are no construction zones gumming up the works. Then they penalize the drivers if everything isn’t done. So you end up with shit thrown over the fence, boxes that look like they were run over, misdelivered packages, and pictures of the corner of a porch.

  • You must have been in charge when I was built. I’ve still got security issues, memory leaks, and there’s a major known issue where under certain conditions I continue to work but stop providing any feedback or messaging.

If you could have your team at least address the resource management issue I’d be grateful.
