  • I guess it could be construed as racist when it’s literally “master/slave”. But I have never seen it as a normalization of slavery because there usually is no value attached to the terms, it’s just describing the relation between them. And I don’t think acknowledging that a slave generally doesn’t have much say in doing what their master tells them is racist in itself or endorsing/normalizing slavery.

But also, I am white, and there are other terms we can use that can describe this kind of relation just fine, so, whatever. I just get mildly annoyed when some stuff that was working perfectly fine gets deprecated just to change these terms and I have to adapt to it.

  • 8th letter of the alphabet (H), twice => short for “Heil Hitler”. Very common way for nazis to recognize each other

What are they gonna do next, ban the symbol from history books or popular games like Wolfenstein?

History is history, so I don’t think it’s banned from history books as long as it doesn’t glorify nazi Germany or engages in revisionism. About videogames though… Until 2018, yes.

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. I only remember this stuff from my German class and my mom who lived in Germany for a few years in the 70s. Also, read the article. This isn’t a legal thing, this is simply a brand trying to avoid getting associated with nazis

  • Also net weight vs gross weight. I think there’s a law that regulates this where I live (France) because it’s always specified but I don’t see it here.

I assume OP is from Canada because I see English and French on the packaging. I lived there for a few years and was losing my mind over this kind of stuff the entire time. Prices never include taxes even though you basically always have to pay them, price per pound/gallon/unit is never displayed either and they really try to swindle you with this, I constantly saw “family sized” or whatever packages that actually cost more per pound than the regular version when I did the math. So I’m not surprised.

But some famous games like Factorio and Minecraft were first sold with independent download systems

Sure, the medium helps, but this was mostly because the creators went out of their way to take a stand against digital distribution platforms, including Gamers’ favorite corporate overlord : Steam (and in this process, got 30% more money on literal millions of sales. Okay, maybe more like 25% if you factor in the costs of doing this themselves). Minecraft even used to have a paragraph dedicated specifically to the decision of not distributing through Steam on their official website.

But try to criticize Steam in any way on basically any “gaming” forum and you’ll get crucified

  • I have not used it for a long time but it’s really easy to fuck the install and potentially your entire system, depending on the fuckup(s).

As a matter of fact, that is exactly why I used it the first time : since it’s a nice lightweight distro and it has some interesting gotchas regarding installation, our sysadmin teacher had us all install it and set it up before we could actually use our distro of choice
