Ubuntu Server supports Windows Active Directory. I haven’t used it for anything but authentication (and authentication works flawlessly) and some basic directory/share permissions but theoretically it should support group policy too.

It’d be cool if there was a mainstream FOSS alternative though (there might be, I’ve done literally 0 research), but this works okay-ish in the meantime.

But for management of the actual production servers at work I use a combination of ManageEngine (super great and reasonably priced) and Microsoft’s Entra (doesn’t work well, don’t do it)

Lenovo sells their thinkpads with Linux too. And they’re absolute tanks.

I dont have a docker container, I just have Samba running on the server itself.

I do have an owncloud container running, which is mapped to a directory. And I have that shared out through samba so I can access it through my file manager. But that’s unnecessary because owncloud is kind of trash.

If you want to use the terminal though, there is scp which is supported on both windows and Linux.

Its just scp [file to copy] [username]@[server IP]:[remote location]

Or if you just use Rufus there’s a checkbox you can select to disable the TPM check, and disable the “force online account” thing too.

Just play steam games. Then it’s only 90 minutes every other night of troubleshooting

(Mostly satire, proton has gotten incredible. I still have a windows install on my PC for gaming but I honestly don’t know the last time I’ve had an issue on my steam deck)

Ah okay. The Chromecast thing is a killer feature I’ve been looking for, my media PC that I have now is pretty good, just doesn’t have that one thing.

I’ve been talking about this for years! I got the idea from razer but I’m imagining the laptop chassis adds a nice screen, enormous battery, better IO, and then it just uses the touch screen as the track pad.

Can you tell me more about these homemade android TV boxes? I built a really shitty front end to “turn” my Linux based mini PCs into a media streamer but it lacks things like Chromecast and reliability haha

I mean the common thing I see in this thread is just people recommending a docker container that hosts the server. Not really what I would call “3rd party bullshit” and I would absolutely recommend running a game server in a docker container. It makes a lot of things easier.
