  • Obviously that steam guy was probably coming from a place of bad faith

The Steam forums actively encourage this kind of bad faith behavior:

    1. when a post gets a new reply it’s moved to the top of the forums. So as long as people are engaging with a post, even if it’s just to make fun of a bigot, it keeps getting pushed back to the top.

    2. Users can “award” posts for various things (helpfull, cool, funny, etc) and users have taken to giving ‘Clown’ awards as a way of making fun of posts. Whenever one of your posts gets an award, you are given Steampoints you can use in the Steam cosmetics store.

This results in every game having bad faith posts “complaining” about wokeness so that people will make fun of them with Clown awards as a way to farm Steampoints. The developer bringing attention to it just helps them get more.

  • So far, the best system we’ve come up with as a species is heavily regulated capitalism with strong social safety nets

And for quite a lot of human history the best system we had come up with was Feudalism, until we started doing something better.

Just because Capitalism is the best we’ve come up with so far doesn’t mean we should just accept it, or that 1000 years from now people won’t look at the Capitalism with the same disdain we look at Feudalism.

  • Love how it takes them 3-5 business days to return the money they stole from you.

We had to remove our credit card from our account because Amazon kept charging us for Prime and I would have to call them to get it cancelled and refunded (and wait 3-5 business days to get our money back).
We were very careful when checking out that we didn’t have anything checked saying “sign me up for Prime”, even had it happen on a day where we did not place an order (and therefore weren’t on the site) for at least a week on either side of us “signing up for Prime.” Once we took the card off the account it stopped happening, so it wasn’t anything we were activating.

It’s annoying to have to re-enter our card information if we want to order something, but less annoying than having to call them every month to cancel Prime again. And anything that increases the barrier to using Amazon is probably a good thing anyway.

  • When I worked at McDonald’s I used to keep the DriveThru headset on after closing while I was doing paper work to tell people “sorry, we’re closed” if they drove up to the speaker board. (Mind you, the building lights and menu board lights are off at this point. Something we call a “clue”.)
That stopped after one too many people screamed “FUCK YOU!” into the speaker board (for us following our posted hours and me politely informing them instead of ignoring them.)

You quickly adopt a policy of “just ignore them and they’ll figure it out.”

  • I just installed Linux Mint for the first time. As a life long Windows user it’s more intuitive than Windows 11, the install and setup was easier than I’ve ever had doing a fresh install off windows, and I was able to connect to my media tower (still running Windows 10) faster and with less hassle than using a Windows machine.

The only thing that was more difficult was having to look up where to find the setting in Steam for “please provide me Linux versions of games that don’t officially support it.”
