Using some of the wifi connection tricks companies have, it can probably associate the device with all the devices your family has and the corresponding data

A quick scan of Mac addresses would be enough. I’d be shocked if it didn’t. Then there’s ip address correlation, which, while it has more steps, is probably easier. Then, of course, you log into your fridge with an email address …

And at this point I’m just going to pause and reflect on how absurd that sentence is to someone from 2010 or earlier.

I imagine it goes like this:

      1. Fridge gather nearby SSIDs
      2. Samsung partners with Google/Meta
      3. Cross reference SSIDs with the ones being collected from Android devices/Meta apps
      4. Get advertising IDs from devices likely in this house
      5. Profit

      Or, and much much cheaper:

      1. To continue configuring this fridge please install this app via play/apple.

This 100%. Also cross-reference IP addresses associated with the fridge’s IP to get Google/Meta advertising IDs on the whole family.

There’s a non-zero chance that when Grandma comes over, she gets ads just for her as long as she’s there.

Ugh. Everything in this thread is totally feasible and probably reasonably accurate.

I miss the old days when I could love tech, and got excited about new tech. It has gotten so sleazy.
