    My heart really goes out to these people who so briefly had a taste of democracy before being suddenly and dramatically subjugated under a junta.

          The US opposes the current coup government, but I don’t think they opposed the collapse of the democratic government. They’re just unhappy with the current coup regime and want a different one. But, you’re right, it’s not exactly Jakarta. There are still similarities. They’re providing hundreds of millions of dollars of support to groups fighting the civil war, passed a bill in 2022 that allows the President discretion to provide said aid, and the American foreign policy director Derek Chollet met with the National Unified Government’s Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung and several armed group leaders, including representatives from the Kachin Independence Army.

          The US’s tentacles are all over this.
