I got a call on Signal and this is what unfolded. The responses just don’t seem human.

Seems weirdly correct English. Even the punctuation is spot on. There are only two sentences where the dot is missing at the end. You for example skip them altogether.

Even if it’s an AI, it is probably told to deny it. And those instructions may include a default strategy, i.e. pretend AI isn’t that advanced yet. And a human character description.

For more detective work: Maybe ask it about recent news everyone should know. AI doesn’t know what happened after its training data was scraped and compiled. But make sure to not give it away yourself. And be aware of broad answers. Demand something specific.

It may not even know what season it is currently. But also be aware there is at least a 25% chance to get it right. And it has given some ambiguous answer about the wildfires. This is additional information.

You can ask it to tell a joke. In my experience most of the AI jokes are something like ‘Why did the chicken cross the road?’ and not funny or elaborate. And if I’m wrong, you - at least - get a funny joke out of it.

If it turns out to be an AI, you can keep it as a free virtual companion or make it do your homework assignments. Maybe it is able to code a software program for you. But at some point you’ll get drawn into a scam. Or very slowly nudged into it.
